Audi A6 Air Conditioning Repair

Audi A6 Air Conditioning Repair

When Mr B brought his Audi A6 to Protech Automotive in Newport for its regular service, he mentioned that the air conditioning had stopped blowing cold air. He suspected it might just need a re-gas, but wanted our team to double-check during the visit.

Our technicians quickly confirmed that the refrigerant level was fine and the system was sealed, yet there was still no cool air. That meant the fault wasn’t a simple maintenance issue — something inside the system was preventing it from switching on.

From that point, our focus shifted to uncovering the real cause. What followed was a detailed, evidence-led investigation using specialist Audi data and diagnostic tools to trace the fault and bring the system back to full working order.

Read on to discover how our team at Protech Automotive in Newport restored cool comfort and performance for our customer.

Audi A6 Air Conditioning Repair: Where the Testing Began

After completing the service, Mr B returned to Protech Automotive in Newport so our technicians could carry out a dedicated investigation into his Audi A6 air conditioning fault. During the initial visit, we had already confirmed that the refrigerant level was correct and that the system was fully sealed. Yet despite everything appearing normal, the air conditioning still refused to produce cold air.

With a re-gas ruled out, we knew the fault lay deeper within the system. Using our specialist diagnostic equipment, we carried out a full system scan to see what was happening behind the scenes.

The results revealed one code:

00256 – Air Conditioning Pressure/Temperature Sensor (G395): No Signal/Communication

This small but crucial component, known as the G395 pressure temperature sensor, monitors both the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant inside the system. It sends that information to the control module, which uses it to decide when it’s safe to run the compressor. If that signal isn’t getting through, the system will shut down to protect itself.

At this stage, we couldn’t yet tell whether the issue was caused by a fault within the G395 pressure temperature sensor itself or by a problem in the wiring that connects it. The next step was to carry out deeper testing to locate where the communication was breaking down.

Where the Investigation Finally Led

With the initial checks complete, our next task was to find where communication between the system and the G395 pressure temperature sensor had been lost.

Using the Right Data and Tools

To guide our next steps, we accessed Audi’s official wiring diagrams and technical data. These detailed plans showed exactly how the sensor receives its power, shares its ground, and communicates through the LIN network — the link that allows the control module to read system pressure and temperature.

Using this information, our technician connected an oscilloscope to the three wires running to the sensor to test each circuit:

  • Power supply: Voltage present and within specification.
  • Earth: Ground connection confirmed and stable.
  • Signal line: No LIN communication signal traced.

That last reading confirmed that while the sensor had power and earth, it wasn’t sending data back to the control module, suggesting that somewhere along the wiring route, the communication signal was being interrupted.

Comparing Signals Across the System

To confirm what we were seeing, we compared the signal from another sensor on the same LIN communication line. The second sensor showed a healthy, active signal, proving that the control module and the rest of the network were functioning correctly.

This meant the problem was isolated; the issue lay between the G395 pressure temperature sensor and the point where the signal rejoined the communication circuit. Somewhere along that section, the connection had been lost.

Tracing the Break

Our technician then followed the wiring route section by section, testing continuity at key connectors from the control module to the front of the vehicle. The signal remained consistent up to a connector hidden behind the passenger-side trim, indicating that the interruption was further forward.

That section of wiring runs across the nearside front wheel arch and beneath the headlamp. When the protective sleeve was opened, the fault became clear. A corroded wire inside the loom had broken down where moisture had seeped in over time. The copper strands had deteriorated, disrupting the LIN communication line and preventing the G395 sensor from sending its readings to the control module.

With the cause identified, the next step was to repair the damaged wiring and restore full operation to the air conditioning system.

Restoring Communication and Repairing the Wiring Fault

With the damaged section of wiring located, our next step at Protech Automotive in Newport was to repair the fault and restore full communication between the G395 pressure temperature sensor and the air conditioning control module. Before beginning the work, we explained our findings to Mr B and outlined the repair process in detail. Once he approved, the repair could begin.

Accessing the Fault Area

During the diagnostic process, we had already opened the protective sleeve, giving us access to the damaged wire and enough space to work safely without disturbing the surrounding circuits.

Preparing and Repairing the Wiring

Following Audi’s official wiring repair standards, our technician carried out the repair methodically and with care:

  • Removed the corroded section of wire from both sides of the break to expose clean copper.
  • Installed a replacement section of matching-gauge automotive wire to restore continuity.
  • Secured each connection using correctly crimped and sealed connectors to prevent future moisture ingress.
  • Tested circuit integrity to confirm a strong, reliable connection.

Testing the Repair

Once the repair was complete, the oscilloscope was reconnected to verify that the LIN communication signal had returned. This time, the signal was clear and stable, showing that data was being transmitted correctly through the repaired wiring.

We then reconnected the G395 pressure temperature sensor, cleared the stored fault code, and restarted the system. The compressor immediately worked as expected. A final system scan confirmed no new fault codes were logged.

With the repair complete and communication fully restored, the air conditioning system in Mr B’s Audi A6 was once again operating exactly as it should.

Cooling Restored. Another Happy Driver

Audi A6 Air Conditioning Repair

For Mr B, the result was just what he hoped for. His Audi A6’s air conditioning was once again producing cold, consistent airflow, just as it should. What had first seemed like a minor fault turned out to be a more complex electrical issue, but through careful testing and accurate repair, our technicians at Protech Automotive in Newport restored the system to full working order.

Every stage of the process, from the initial checks to the final oscilloscope confirmation, was carried out methodically using genuine Audi data and the correct repair standards. This attention to detail ensured that the fault was fully resolved and that the system would continue to perform reliably in the future.

For our team, this successful Audi A6 air conditioning repair is another example of how experience, precision, and the right approach lead to lasting results. Mr B left knowing his air conditioning system was working exactly as Audi intended.
