BMW M235i P0300 Misfire

BMW M235i P0300 Misfire

“It’s already had new coils, injectors, and plugs, but the misfire just keeps happening.”

That’s how Mrs K described her BMW M235i’s fault when she visited Protech Automotive, Newport.

The misfire was unpredictable, characterised by a sudden loss of power, a flashing engine light, and a rough idling before returning to normal. Most of the time, her car drove fine, but during cold starts or under acceleration, it felt hesitant.

Mrs K had already visited several garages, each of which had replaced parts in an attempt to fix the BMW intermittent misfire issue, but it always returned.

This led to her bringing her vehicle to our BMW experts at Protech Automotive, Newport. Our team used a structured, data-driven diagnostic approach to identify the underlying issue and ensure the fault was resolved during the first visit.

Listening First: Our Initial Inspection

At Protech Automotive, Newport, our diagnostic process always begins with your account of the issue.

When Mrs K brought in her BMW M235i, she explained that the misfire happened mainly on cold starts or when the vehicle was accelerating, causing a flashing engine light before returning to normal.

She mentioned that she’d previously had the spark plugs, coils, and injectors replaced elsewhere, but the fault continued.

By noting what had been tried and when the problem occurred, our BMW experts could plan an effective diagnostic approach before any tools were used.

After listening to Mrs K, our team performed a visual inspection, checking for visible faults such as loose connectors or contamination. However, in this instance, everything appeared fine, so we set out to confirm the fault on the road.

During a test drive, our team successfully replicated the problem Mrs K had described; the hesitation appeared briefly under load before reaching its operating temperature.

Back at our garage, our technicians connected dealership-level scan equipment to her BMW to check for stored fault codes.

The scan revealed:

  • P0300 – Random or multiple cylinder misfire detected.
  • P0304 – Cylinder 4 misfire detected.
  • P0306 – Cylinder 6 misfire detected.

The codes confirmed misfires were occurring, but didn’t explain why. To identify the true cause, we had to look deeper into the data.

Uncovering the Root Cause of the BMW M235i P0300 Misfire

Once our team had confirmed the misfire fault, they set out to identify the cause of the misfire.

Because the problem appeared from a cold start, our attention turned to the vehicle’s ignition system and the recently replaced components. Mrs K mentioned that new plugs, coils, and injectors had already been fitted, making them the logical place to start.

We began by checking the specification and quality of those parts. Initially, everything looked ok. However, the spark plugs grabbed our attention. They were non-genuine parts made by BMW’s supplier but produced to slightly different tolerances.

Even though these differences may be small, they can have a significant impact on a precisely tuned engine like the BMW M235i, affecting combustion stability and ignition timing.

To confirm what we’d found, our experts carried out a BMW misfire diagnosis using an oscilloscope.

Each cylinder’s ignition pattern was analysed carefully:

  • We recorded both primary and secondary ignition waveforms.
  • Compared performance across all cylinders under load and cold start.
  • Checked coil behaviour, injector operation, and wiring signals.

The traces showed inconsistent ignition signals, with no signs of coil or injector faults, which drew our attention back to the spark plugs.

Testing confirmed that the non-genuine plugs were responsible for the BMW M235i P0300 misfire.

Although BMW’s supplier manufactured the vehicle’s spark plugs, they failed to meet BMW’s strict specifications, resulting in a P0300 fault code and intermittent BMW M235i misfire.

We’ve encountered this issue before, and it’s covered further in our spark plug blog, highlighting why genuine spark plugs are vital for reliability and performance.

Repairing the BMW M235i P0300 Misfire Fault

Once our BMW experts confirmed the fault, they called Mrs K to explain what had been found and to recommend the next steps.

At Protech Automotive, Newport, we prioritise clear communication. Every stage of the process is explained, and no work is carried out without customer approval. You stay in total control of the situation.

During the call, we advised that while BMW’s supplier produced the current spark plugs that another garage had fitted, they didn’t match BMW’s precise design standards. That small variation in specification was enough to cause ignition instability, particularly during cold starts.

To solve the intermittent BMW M235i misfire, the solution was clear:

Replace all six spark plugs with genuine BMW parts to restore full performance and prevent further issues from appearing.

Once Mrs K approved of our recommendations, our BMW experts completed the repair following BMW’s official procedure:

  • Allowed the engine to cool fully to prevent thread damage.
  • Removed the spark plugs and inspected the coil packs and plug wells for carbon tracking or oil contamination.
  • Cleaned and prepared each plug seat to ensure an accurate fit.
  • Checked every new BMW plug for the correct electrode gap and resistance.
  • Installed the plugs to BMW’s torque settings using calibrated tools.
  • Re-fitted and tested all coils to ensure secure operation.

This methodical approach ensured the ignition system performed to BMW standards, eliminating the BMW M235i P0300 misfire and restoring smooth power delivery.

Confirming the BMW M235i Misfire Was Correctly Resolved

With the misfire repair complete, the next step was to verify that the repair had been successful.

At Protech Automotive, Newport, every repair our experts perform concludes with a full validation check to prove the repair has achieved the intended result.

Our BMW experts rechecked the ignition system using an oscilloscope, analysing each cylinder’s waveform to ensure optimal performance.

Once the readings confirmed consistent operation, the BMW M235i was started from cold and taken on a comprehensive road test.

The test showed smooth, consistent performance with no sign of hesitation or warning lights. The intermittent misfire that occurred under acceleration was gone.

A final scan confirmed no fault codes remained, verifying that the BMW M235i P0300 misfire had been completely fixed.

This confirmed the BMW misfire repair was successful, and the vehicle was ready to be handed back to Mrs K in complete working order.

Proven BMW P0300 Misfire Repair

When Mrs K returned to collect her BMW M235i, our BMW experts at Protech Automotive, Newport, walked her through each stage of the diagnostic and repair process. Using the oscilloscope data and final fault scan, we showed that the misfire had been completely eliminated.

Through a clear and methodical diagnostic process, our team had identified and repaired the intermittent BMW M235i P0300 misfire precisely and efficiently, while avoiding unnecessary replacement parts.

Mrs K was pleased to have her vehicle back in peak working condition. She drove away with confidence, knowing her BMW M235i was performing as intended and that the issue had been permanently resolved. She’d even received better than dealership value with us.
