VW Polo Power Steering Fault

VW Polo Power Steering Fault

By the time Mr G contacted Protech Automotive, his Volkswagen Polo had already had steering work carried out. A part had been changed. Yet the fault remained.

The steering warning light was still on, and power assistance was still missing. Despite recent work, the car remained heavy to steer, especially at low speeds. Whatever was causing the VW Polo power steering fault had not been addressed.

When Mr G got in touch, he was not looking for another quick answer. He wanted to know why the power steering system was still shut down and what had been missed the first time around.

The next step was to book the Volkswagen Polo into Protech Automotive in Newport for a full technical evaluation. That meant starting from the beginning, looking at how the steering system was behaving as a whole, and working through the fault without making assumptions about what should or should not have fixed it.

With the vehicle scheduled in, it was time to take a closer look at why the steering system had not returned to normal operation.

VW Polo Power Steering Fault

Initial Inspection of the VW Polo Power Steering Fault

When Mr G’s Volkswagen Polo arrived at Protech Automotive in Newport, the reported symptoms were clear. The power steering was not operating, and a steering warning light was visible on the dashboard. Our technicians confirmed the same behaviour during initial checks.

We also reviewed the steering work that had already been carried out elsewhere. A replacement steering pump and motor unit had been fitted prior to the vehicle coming to us, yet the issues persisted. With that context established, we began the first stage of our technical evaluation.

The initial focus was on reviewing the work already completed and carrying out a visual inspection of the steering system. The newly installed pump and motor unit showed no signs of physical damage, and there was no evidence of fluid leakage or disturbed connections. With nothing obvious found at this stage, electronic checks followed.

Using Volkswagen dealer-level diagnostic equipment, we carried out a full system scan of the steering control module. This is what was revealed:

  • Fault code 00816 power steering sensor (G250)

Fault code 00816 points to a sensor signal issue within the power steering system. However, on its own, the code does not identify the root cause. At this stage, it was not possible to determine whether the issue related to the sensor itself, pump compatibility, system configuration following installation, or another factor within the steering system.

With fault code 00816 power steering sensor (G250) located, and the symptoms matching what we were experiencing during testing, we moved on to the next stage of the diagnostic process to understand what the steering system was missing and why assistance had been disabled.

Investigating the Cause of Fault Code 00816

With fault code 00816 confirmed and the symptoms verified during initial checks, we moved into a structured technical investigation. The aim was to understand why the VW Polo power steering fault had caused the system to shut down and what the control module was no longer receiving.

To do this, each stage of testing was carried out in sequence, ruling out possible causes before moving on to the next step.

Step 1: Checking electrical supply to the steering pump

The first step was to confirm that the steering pump and motor unit were receiving the correct electrical supply.

Using Volkswagen wiring diagrams, we identified the main power feed and ground circuits at the pump connector. Both were tested with the ignition switched on to confirm correct voltage and continuity.

What we found:

  • Battery voltage was present at the pump.
  • The ground circuit tested correctly.
  • No supply-related issues were identified.

This confirmed that the steering pump and motor unit were being powered correctly, allowing us to rule out an electrical supply fault.

Step 2: Reviewing serial data and system communication

With the power and ground supply confirmed, we connected our ODIS diagnostic tool to review system communication and serial data from the steering control module.

We checked the fault memory and monitored the data being exchanged between the steering system and the vehicle network.

What we found:

  • The steering control module was responsive and communicating correctly.
  • No network or communication faults were present.
  • The signal from the power steering sensor (G250) was missing or invalid.

As a safety measure, the system had disabled steering assistance because it could not interpret the sensor signal. This ruled out a complete module failure and pointed towards a signal or configuration-related issue.

Step 3: Confirming steering pump compatibility

As a replacement pump and motor unit had already been fitted, it was essential to confirm that the installed unit was correct for this specific Volkswagen Polo.

We checked the part number fitted to the vehicle against Volkswagen’s parts database using the vehicle’s VIN. We also reviewed the steering system variants used on this model, as not all pump units are interchangeable.

What we found:

  • The fitted pump and motor unit did not match the original specification for this vehicle.
  • The internal configuration of the unit did not align with what the steering control module expected.

This mismatch explained why fault code 00816 was being triggered and why the system was unable to process the sensor signal correctly.

Step 4: Checking programming and coding status

Even with the correct hardware installed, steering pump units must be configured to the vehicle to function correctly.

Using ODIS, we accessed the pump’s control module and checked the coding and adaptation status to confirm whether the setup process had been completed after installation.

What we found:

  • The replacement pump and motor unit had not been coded to the vehicle.
  • Without correct coding, the steering system could not interpret the sensor signal.

This confirmed the underlying cause of the fault. The previously installed pump and motor unit was both incompatible with the vehicle and left uncoded, resulting in fault code 00816 and the loss of power steering assistance.

VW Power Steering Repair Using the Correct Pump and Coding

Once the cause of the fault had been confirmed, we explained the findings to Mr G and outlined what was required to complete the repair. With approval given, work began on restoring the steering system correctly.

  • The correct steering pump and motor unit was identified by matching the vehicle’s VIN against Volkswagen’s parts system, ensuring the unit matched the original specification used on this model.
  • Before fitting the replacement, the surrounding area was checked. Electrical connectors, wiring, and hydraulic lines around the rear-mounted steering fluid tank were inspected to confirm they were clean, dry, and undamaged.
  • The incompatible pump and motor unit was removed, and the correct OEM replacement was installed in its place. All fixings and connections were secured to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
  • The power steering hydraulic circuit was refilled with the correct fluid and bled according to Volkswagen’s recommended procedure to remove any trapped air.
  • With the hardware in place, we used ODIS, Volkswagen’s dealer-level diagnostic tool, to complete the setup process. The new pump was coded and configured to the vehicle so the steering control module could recognise it correctly.
  • The stored fault code was cleared, and the system was tested. The steering warning light switched off, power assistance returned, and the steering operated normally during post-repair checks.

With the VW power steering repair completed and configuration finished, the steering system responded as it should and full power steering functionality was restored.

Result: Power Steering Restored and Fault Cleared

Once the correct pump and motor unit had been fitted and configured, the Volkswagen Polo’s power steering system responded as expected. The steering warning light was no longer present, and full power steering operation was restored, allowing the car to be driven normally again.

Despite earlier repair work elsewhere failing to resolve the issue, our structured technical evaluation allowed the fault to be identified and corrected during a single visit. This reinforced the importance of assessing system compatibility and configuration, not just individual components.

During the repair, Mr G was able to stay mobile using our free courtesy car. The work was also backed by Protech Automotive’s 12-month parts and labour guarantee, providing reassurance once the vehicle was returned to service.
