Mr J’s 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport had given no cause for concern. Then, during an otherwise normal journey, warning lights came on across the dashboard, power fell away, and the vehicle entered limp mode.

That kind of sudden change leaves any driver feeling uncertain. Was it safe to keep driving? What was causing the warning lights? And how bad was the problem going to get?

Assessing the Blocked DPF Symptoms After the Driver’s Report

Once Mr J’s Discovery Sport was at Protech Automotive, Newport, the first thing we did was listen. We asked Mr J to describe when the warning lights had appeared, how the vehicle had been behaving since, and whether anything about his regular driving habits had shifted recently.

Regular short journeys with frequent stopping and starting are one of the most common triggers for DPF problems, as they don’t give the engine enough time to reach and hold the temperatures that regeneration requires. Understanding Mr J’s typical driving pattern helped shape the assessment before any diagnostic testing was carried out.

With that information to hand, our technicians connected the vehicle to our dealer-level diagnostic equipment and completed a full system scan. Among the stored codes, two were directly associated with the DPF concern:

  • Land Rover P2463 fault code — P2463-00, showing that the engine management system had logged excessive soot accumulation or restriction in the diesel particulate filter.
  • Land Rover P246B fault code — P246B-00, showing that the conditions necessary for regeneration were not being consistently achieved, or that regeneration attempts had been interrupted.

Both codes were consistent with DPF issues, but fault codes on their own only account for part of the picture. To identify what had led to the DPF warning and the associated codes, and to confirm the correct repair approach, a more thorough inspection was required.

Our technicians advanced into a detailed, step-by-step investigation to identify the root cause.

The fault codes had made it clear that the DPF was heavily loaded with soot and that regeneration wasn’t completing as it should. But our technicians needed to work out why the filter had deteriorated to that extent before the correct repair could be carried out. A Land Rover DPF fault can stem from multiple different causes, and the approach to resolving it depends on accurately identifying the trigger. Each potential factor was investigated methodically, with one area ruled out before attention turned to the next.

Step 1: External DPF Inspection

The first check was to confirm whether the DPF itself was still in a condition that could be recovered. A cracked or compromised filter substrate would change the repair approach entirely, potentially requiring replacement rather than cleaning.

  • The DPF housing and accessible components were inspected and revealed no signs of external damage or failure.
  • This confirmed the filter was likely still serviceable and suitable for cleaning.

Step 2: Oil Level, Condition, and Oil Dilution Check

Attention then moved to the engine oil. Our technicians assessed the level and condition carefully, with particular focus on whether oil dilution was present. Oil dilution occurs when unburnt fuel passes the piston rings and enters the engine’s oil supply. This typically happens when DPF regeneration attempts fail to complete. During a regeneration attempt, the engine management system introduces additional fuel through late post-injection to raise exhaust gas temperatures. If the cycle is interrupted, some of that fuel can wash past the piston rings into the sump rather than being burnt off in the exhaust.

  • The oil assessment confirmed fuel dilution had taken place.
  • Diluted oil degrades over time and can affect overall engine condition. Meanwhile, the continued failure to regenerate left the DPF with no means of reducing its soot load, and the accumulation kept growing.

With that finding confirmed, our technicians continued the inspection to determine whether any other factors had contributed to the problem.

Step 3: Air Filter Condition Check

The air filter was assessed next. A restricted air filter limits the airflow reaching the engine, which can lower combustion efficiency and increase particulate production. This increases the volume of particulates produced and places a greater load on the DPF over time.

  • The air filter was in acceptable order and was not contributing to the issue.

Step 4: DPF Pressure Readings

Differential pressure across the DPF was taken using our dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • The readings were high, confirming that the filter was carrying a significant soot load.
  • This was in line with the Land Rover P2463 fault code stored during the initial scan.

Step 5: Boost Leak Assessment

The intake and boost system was then checked for leaks. A boost leak reduces combustion efficiency and can accelerate the rate at which soot loads the DPF.

  • Testing confirmed no leaks were present.

With all checks complete, the full picture had become clear. The DPF had not been able to regenerate, causing soot to build up in the filter progressively. The oil dilution identified during the inspection was a direct result of repeated failed regeneration attempts. Over time, the soot accumulation reached the level at which the dashboard warning lights appeared, the vehicle was forced into limp mode, and power dropped away substantially.

Every sensor and hardware component checked out correctly, with no fault found that would prevent regeneration, indicating the issue was most likely rooted in driving conditions and interrupted regeneration cycles.

With the underlying cause now clear, our technicians reached out to Mr J to present the findings and detail the repair plan. Once he confirmed he was happy to proceed, the work began.

Engine oil and filter change

The engine oil had become fuel-diluted through repeated unsuccessful regeneration attempts and was no longer providing adequate engine protection.

  • The diluted oil was extracted and a full engine oil and filter change was completed.
  • The oil used was the correct Land Rover-specified grade for the Discovery Sport’s Ingenium diesel engine, applied in line with manufacturer standards.

Diesel particulate filter cleaning

With fresh oil now in place, our technicians moved on to the DPF. The filter had been verified as structurally intact during the earlier inspection, so diesel particulate filter cleaning was carried out to reduce the soot load and restore flow through the filter before performing regeneration.

Forced DPF regeneration and system reset

Once the cleaning was complete, a service regeneration was initiated using the manufacturer-level software.

  • Following the regeneration, relevant DPF adaptation and soot loading values were reset in accordance with manufacturer procedures, ensuring the engine management system could accurately monitor the filter following cleaning and regeneration.
  • The fault memory was cleared, and the system was retested. No new fault codes were stored.

Customer guidance

On the Ingenium diesel engine, frequent short journeys can prevent DPF regeneration from completing. When regeneration is interrupted, fuel introduced through late post-injection, intended to raise exhaust temperatures for regeneration, can wash past the piston rings. Over time, this leads to oil dilution.

  • Our technicians explained this to Mr J and set out the driving habits that would support the DPF regenerating correctly going forward.

DPF Regeneration Issues Resolved: A Successful Outcome for Mr J
