Range Rover P25A9 Fault

There was no gradual build-up. Mr J’s 2018 Range Rover Velar had been behaving perfectly normally when, without any prior warning, the engine management light appeared on the dashboard. Alongside it came a warning message relating to the engine oil system.

With the valve’s electrical circuit interrupted, the ECM may not be able to actuate it correctly, meaning oil flow to the piston cooling jets may not be controlled as intended.

That’s enough to trigger the engine management light and an oil-related warning message, even when the oil level is where it should be. The warning relates to the engine’s ability to control oil flow to the piston cooling system, not to the amount of oil in the engine.

The fault code was now on record, and the symptoms confirmed. Our technicians turned their attention to a detailed diagnostic process aimed at confirming the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

The Underlying Cause Behind the Range Rover P25A9 Fault

The fault code provided a strong starting point for the P25A9 Range Rover diagnostic. It confirmed an open circuit, but not where in the circuit the problem was. The wiring, connector, valve, or another section of the circuit could each have been responsible. Our technicians worked through each one methodically.

Step 4: Oscilloscope analysis

To take the investigation further, our technicians used an oscilloscope to assess the electrical integrity of the wiring between the engine control module and the piston cooling oil control valve. This captured signal and supply behaviour under live conditions, rather than relying on a static resistance check alone.

  • The wiring tested within expected parameters, confirming that the circuit between the control module and the valve was intact.

Step 5: Direct activation of the piston cooling oil control valve

With the wiring, connector, and terminal pins all cleared of fault, the valve was the remaining component to assess. Our technicians used dealer-level diagnostic software to command the valve to activate, and monitored its response.

  • The valve did not respond as expected. Testing confirmed an electrical failure within the valve, establishing it as the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

Each section of the circuit had been individually tested and cleared. The wiring and all connections were confirmed as sound, leaving the piston cooling oil control valve as the confirmed source of the fault.

Correcting the Piston Cooling Oil Control Valve Failure

With the root cause established, our team contacted Mr J to present the findings. We explained how each part of the circuit had been tested and cleared, and why the piston cooling oil control valve was the component requiring replacement. Once Mr J had given his approval, the repair began.

  • Post-repair system checks confirmed the replacement valve was responding correctly to the engine control module.
  • A final system scan verified no outstanding fault codes remained and the oil-related warning message had cleared.
