Range Rover plug-in hybrid charging port

B1DC5 Fault Code Fix

There it was on the dashboard display: “EV mode temporarily unavailable.”

Mrs J had seen the message appear, and it was clear something wasn’t right. The petrol engine ran from the moment the vehicle was started. Electric driving was unavailable. There was no switching to EV mode. Fuel was being used on every journey… short or long.

For a plug-in hybrid, that took away one of its main advantages.

That was the problem Mrs J was facing with her 2020 Range Rover Evoque PHEV. EV mode had stopped working, and there was no obvious reason for it.

She contacted Protech Automotive in Newport to have the fault investigated.

The vehicle was booked in straight away.

The fault prevented the Range Rover Evoque PHEV from operating in EV mode, forcing the petrol engine to remain running

When a Range Rover PHEV won’t switch to EV mode, the cause isn’t always obvious. A Range Rover EV mode fault can stem from several issues, and thorough testing is the only way to identify the reason behind it. If this is happening to your vehicle, contact Protech Automotive in Newport and our technicians will help track down the cause.

The Starting Point: Assessing the Range Rover EV Mode Fault

Once Mrs J’s Range Rover Evoque PHEV was at Protech Automotive, Newport, our technicians spoke with her to understand how the fault had been presenting. The vehicle would not enter EV mode, the petrol engine ran continuously from start-up, and the “EV mode temporarily unavailable” message was present on the dashboard display each time the vehicle was used.

After the symptoms were confirmed, our technicians connected dealer-level diagnostic equipment to the vehicle and ran a full system scan. The scan brought up one stored fault code:

  • B1DC5 High-voltage Coolant Heater #1, no operation.

The initial diagnostic scan identified B1DC5-93, indicating no operation from the high-voltage coolant heater

The serial data was reviewed at the same time, allowing our technicians to evaluate how the vehicle’s systems were operating in the context of the stored fault code.

The fault code pointed to the high-voltage coolant heater, but at this stage it was unclear whether the heater itself was at fault, whether a wiring or connection issue was behind it, or whether the problem existed somewhere else. Thorough PHEV hybrid system diagnostics were needed to determine the root cause.

Investigating the B1DC5 Fault Code Step by Step on the Range Rover Evoque PHEV

The scan had given our technicians a clear direction, and they began working through the fault methodically. To carry out the correct B1DC5 fault code fix, every possible cause needed to be tested until the root cause was confirmed.

Step 1: Consulting manufacturer technical information

The manufacturer’s technical information service was used to research the B1DC5 fault code in the specific context of the Range Rover Evoque PHEV.

In a plug-in hybrid, the high-voltage coolant heater plays a key role in the thermal management system. It draws energy from the high-voltage battery to heat coolant, allowing the cabin to be heated without the petrol engine running. If this component fails, the vehicle can no longer provide cabin heat electrically. In response, the system may force the petrol engine to run for cabin heat, and EV mode becomes unavailable.

This connection was important to understand because it shows how a heater fault can prevent the vehicle from operating in electric mode. It also made clear that the investigation needed to focus on the high-voltage coolant heater and its associated circuit.

Step 2: Checking for technical service bulletins

Our technicians also checked the manufacturer’s database for any technical service bulletins or known issues related to the B1DC5 fault code on this model.

The manufacturer’s records showed that high-voltage coolant heater failure is a known occurrence on the Evoque PHEV. While this didn’t remove the need for testing, it offered useful background and supported the direction the investigation was taking.

Step 3: Visual inspection and electrical checks

A visual inspection was carried out on the high-voltage coolant heater and its immediate surroundings, checking for damage, corrosion, or disturbance. Electrical tests were also run on the wiring and connectors linked to the heater.

  • No visual issues were identified. The wiring and connectors were intact, with no evidence of damage or contamination.

Step 4: Active testing of the high-voltage coolant heater

Our technicians used dealer-level diagnostic equipment to carry out active testing, activating the high-voltage coolant heater directly and monitoring whether it responded.

Given that this work relates to the vehicle’s high-voltage electrical system, it was carried out by HV-trained technicians with insulated tooling and dedicated safety equipment.

  • When activated directly, the heater gave no response. Testing confirmed failure of the unit.

Manufacturer diagnostic testing confirmed a fault with the high-voltage coolant heater and directed replacement of the unit

Step 5: Circuit verification and wiring checks

To confirm the failure sat within the heater unit and not elsewhere in the circuit, further circuit verification and wiring checks were completed between the control module and the high-voltage coolant heater.

  • Circuit verification returned results within expected parameters, confirming the wiring and connections were in good condition.

The conclusion

All of the testing led to the same conclusion. The high-voltage coolant heater was non-responsive, and our technicians confirmed it as the root cause. Failure of this component is a recognised issue on the Evoque PHEV, and testing confirmed that Mrs J’s vehicle had been affected. Because the heater was no longer working, the vehicle couldn’t heat the cabin electrically. The system ran the petrol engine for heat instead, which kept the engine running at all times and prevented EV operation. That was the cause of the Range Rover EV mode fault Mrs J had been experiencing.

With the root cause confirmed, the high-voltage coolant heater needed to be replaced as part of the B1DC5 fault code fix.

Completing the Repair: High-Voltage Coolant Heater Replacement

Our technicians contacted Mrs J after confirming the root cause to talk her through the findings. We explained what the testing had shown, why wiring and connection faults had been ruled out, and why the high-voltage coolant heater needed to be replaced. Mrs J gave approval for the repair, and work began.

High-voltage safety procedures

  • Before any work started on the heater, manufacturer procedures were followed to isolate and make the vehicle’s high-voltage system safe. An HV-trained technician carried out the repair using insulated tooling and dedicated safety equipment.

Component replacement

  • The heater was disconnected from the high-voltage system and carefully removed from the vehicle’s coolant circuit.
  • A new replacement unit was installed, and all electrical connections, mounting points, and seals were inspected to confirm correct installation.
  • The coolant circuit was refilled, and the system was tested to confirm it was operating correctly.

Post-repair verification

  • All stored fault codes were cleared from the control module.
  • Dealer-level diagnostic software was used to confirm the replacement heater was operating correctly.
  • The vehicle was run and monitored to confirm that EV mode was available and the petrol engine had stopped running continuously.
  • A system-wide scan after the work was completed confirmed no fault codes were present.

Mrs J’s Range Rover Back to Full Hybrid Operation After the B1DC5 Fault Code Fix

Once the work was complete, Mrs J’s Range Rover Evoque PHEV left Protech Automotive with EV mode restored. The petrol engine was no longer running when it shouldn’t have been, the “EV mode temporarily unavailable” message had cleared from the display, and the vehicle was performing as a plug-in hybrid should.

Mrs J was delighted with the outcome: a fault that had removed her ability to drive on electric was thoroughly investigated, precisely traced to a failed high-voltage coolant heater, and resolved in a single visit. Throughout the process she was kept fully informed, with honest communication building her confidence in the repair.

Protech Automotive provided Mrs J with a shorter turnaround than a main dealer, a competitive repair cost, and the confidence that the work was handled by HV-trained technicians with the specialist equipment and safety procedures that hybrid vehicle work demands.
